Understanding the Causes of Training Plateaus

1. Insufficient Workout Variation

One of the primary causes of training plateaus is a lack of variety in your fitness routine. When your body becomes accustomed to the same workout regimen over time, it adapts by becoming more efficient, which can result in diminished progress. By incorporating diverse exercises, routines, and equipment into your X Gym training plan, you can challenge your body in new ways, force it to adapt, and overcome plateaus.

Luckily, this is built in at the X Gym. For one on one training, our members get a new full-body routine every 14 workouts. The Xerises are new as well as the method. Traditional training will change up the exercises from time to time, but the method (the way the reps are performed) stays the same. With our methodology, we change the exercises AND the method every time, a new routine happens. Changing both creates true muscle confusion and plateau prevention where changing just one will result in an eventual plateau.

2. Only Using Progressive Overload

Progressive overload involves consistently and gradually increasing the intensity, volume, or frequency of your workouts to ensure continuous progress. Without proper progressive overload, your muscles have no reason to grow or adapt, leading to stagnation in your fitness journey. Sounds complicated, doesn’t it? Well, it is. Luckily, progressive overload and its complications are limited to traditional training because X Gym has a better way.

We use Time Under Tension (TUT) and reach Complete Muscle Fatigue (CMF) at the end of each exercise, which requires only 1 set per Xercise. This is one of the reasons our methods are som time efficient, but also why ours is so much simpler and more effective.

Most people don’t realize progressive overload was invented in 1891, and is quite outdated. Our methods are all based on recent scientific research, so they are much more effective, just like the automobiles of today are much better than the “horseless buggies” of 1891.

3. Suboptimal Nutrition and Recovery

Training plateaus can also be a result of inadequate nutrition and recovery practices. If your body is not receiving the necessary nutrients, hydration, and rest it needs to repair and grow after workouts, your progress may slow down or come to a halt. Establishing a balanced diet and prioritizing recovery can help address these issues and set you back on the path to progress.

4. Overtraining and Mundane Routines

Training too much can be a significant problem, especially with those who are doing progressive overload, because as training volume, increases, and/or time increases, it can be too much of a load for the body to recover fully. This is only true, however, with traditional training because of the nature of the ballistic motions and high repetitions, causing microtears in the muscle, creating the need for recovery of these micro “injuries.” Since X Gym doesn’t use ballistic motions or high repetitions (or even heavy weights), due to our TUT & CMF, principles, the extensive recovery requirements of traditional training aren’t needed with X Gym methods, so over-training is virtually impossible.

If an exercise or routine is performed for too long or isn’t physically interesting enough, the brain can get bored with it, and then motivation suffers and/or intensity declines. Search shows that no matter how interesting and exercise our routine might be, the brain still gets bored with it in about six to eight weeks. That’s why X Gym changes routines every seven weeks for one-on-one members and every month for group training members.
